Ethan is an instructor at GoPeer. Ethan is currently pursuing a major in Political Science and Business Administration at UC Berkeley.

When did you know you wanted to study Political Science and Business Administration?

I’ve always really enjoyed public speaking, debating, and interacting with other people, and I did extracurricular stuff like Speech & Debate in high school as a result. I think that studying Poli-Sci and Business is really nice because it has this focus on humans and human relations, which is really important to learn when entering any career in the future. I also want to end up at Law School, and I think that the stuff I’m learning will be really applicable in both grad school and finding a job.

What is your favorite thing about UC Berkeley?

Easily the people. Moving from a really small place like Bakersfield to Berkeley has been tough, but in a good way. Everyone here is so smart, so motivated, but also so cool to be friends with. They make me want to push past my limits, and I’m really grateful for that. I think that I’ve grown a lot as a person because of the friends I’ve made here.

Why do you think teaching online is beneficial?

For me, it’s nice to be an online tutor because it’s a lot easier to meet new people across the country. Every state’s curriculum’s are also just a little different, and it’s helping me grow as a teacher to adapt and help students based on their needs.

What are some of your teaching principles or strategies?

I specialize in English/Reading & Writing/Grammar, and I think that English can be really complicated for students when the reality is the opposite. My main principle is that every single person has the ability to create a compelling story/argument. They just need someone to help them speak their ideas out into existence and onto paper. I find that just having a conversation with my students often results in them understanding the material.

What do you think is most unique about GoPeer?

It’s casual, but in a good way! I’ve been able to get all my questions answered by the people who run GoPeer with almost no delay, so it’s nice to know that there’s folks looking out for me. GoPeer is really good at connecting with its tutors, and making sure that that same attention is given from tutors to their students.

Any advice for students or parents who are interested in GoPeer?

To parents: as the oldest of 5 siblings, I know how hard it can be for kids to go through online learning. But I think that finding the right tutor can relieve some of that stress and make learning a little bit more fun. I’d take advantage of the ability to get one-on-one attention.

What do you do outside of teaching with GoPeer?

I love playing tennis and basketball with my friends. My favorite movies/TV shows all have to do with Star Wars. When I have a bit of free time, I also enjoy playing battle royale games on my PS4.
